We make TeachRoster, so read this knowing that. Nothing here is scored out of five — every claim about another tool is taken from that vendor's own public pages, checked in September 2026, and linked so you can see whether it still holds.

The question that decides it
Before features, ask whether a student needs an account. A class of thirty on shared Chromebooks means thirty sign-ins, thirty forgotten passwords by November, and for under-13s a consent process that in many schools goes past a parent.
Note that live play and homework are different questions. Wayground lets a student join a live game with a code and no account, and then requires one for work set for later. If your reason for avoiding accounts is consent rather than convenience, that distinction is the whole decision.
Where the others are better
MagicSchool generates a wider range of teaching material than we do, and it is the one to beat on breadth. Wayground gives better question-by-question analytics. Kahoot does something we do not attempt at all — a live game the whole room plays together — and nothing on this page replaces it.
TeachRoster is also the newest and smallest of the four. If you need a mature product with years of school deployments behind it, that is a fair reason to choose one of the others.

Recorded from each vendor’s own pages, not judged. A blank cell means we did not find it, which is a fact about our search rather than a claim about their product — a website can show that something exists and cannot show that something does not.

Three of these four make all four things, and Wayground has done so for years. This grid is the least useful table on the page for deciding between them — the two columns that separate these products are whether a student needs an account and whether a register is included, and both of those are above.

Which of these lets students join without an account?
TeachRoster never asks a student for an account, including for homework — a class code and a four-digit PIN covers everything. Wayground allows account-free joining for live games but requires an account for homework and progress tracking. MagicSchool routes students through teacher-created rooms. Kahoot does not state its requirement on its public plan pages.
Which of these includes attendance?
Only TeachRoster. MagicSchool, Wayground and Kahoot are content and assessment tools, so a register normally lives in the school's own information system.
Is TeachRoster free?
Free for teachers during the beta, with no card and no cap on how many students take part. It is also the newest and least proven tool on this page, which is a fair reason to be careful with it.
